Global flooding is becoming an increasingly pressing problem due to climate change. This phenomenon not only causes environmental damage, but also has a direct impact on human life. One of the main effects of climate change is the increase in the frequency and intensity of rainfall which triggers floods. According to the IPCC report, every year, more than 40 million people are forced to move due to water-related disasters. When extreme rainfall occurs, drainage systems in cities are often unable to accommodate large volumes of water, causing puddles on roads, houses and agricultural land. This impact is most pronounced in urban areas, where land compaction reduces the natural capacity to absorb water. Large cities such as Jakarta and Mumbai experienced several major floods in a decade, resulting in significant economic losses. Floods not only destroy physical buildings and infrastructure, but also affect people’s health. Polluted water sources due to flooding can cause the spread of diseases, including cholera and leptospirosis. The availability of clean water is a critical issue in areas frequently affected by flooding. Post-flood health care requires significant and ongoing resources, further burdening an already stressed health system. The agricultural sector is also badly affected. Floods damage crops and result in losses for farmers. Plants that are submerged in water can fail to harvest, while corroded soil loses its fertility. This causes food shortages and increases food prices dramatically. According to the FAO, more than 1.3 billion people depend on agriculture for their livelihoods, so the impact of flooding on this sector has the potential to worsen the global food crisis. Climate change causes global temperatures to rise, which in turn causes the polar ice caps to melt and increases sea levels. Coastal areas are increasingly vulnerable to tidal floods. Communities living on the coast face greater threats, with the possibility of having to evacuate their homes. This resettlement is often difficult and can trigger social conflict. Adaptation is key in dealing with global flooding. Building waterproof infrastructure, planting trees, and implementing better water management systems are steps that can help. Public education is also important so that they can protect themselves and their property from the impacts of flooding. By mitigating the impacts of flooding, we not only protect human life but also interconnected ecosystems. A collaborative approach between government, NGOs and local communities is needed to design long-term solutions. Technological innovations, such as flood early warning systems and weather monitoring applications, can support mitigation efforts. Involving communities in infrastructure planning and development makes solutions more sustainable. Without concrete action, global flooding will only become an increasingly real threat to human life in this century.
